Looky what I got. Man, y'all would never believe it, but that was the best battle of my life. And I've had lots of 'em since gettin' here, but hoo boy, that was just intense as hell. It was fun though, don't get me wrong! Suee fought so good though, oh my god. You ain't ever seen a piggy fight like her, let me tell you! And then the last one... Bird versus Bird. My Pidgeot against Falkner's. Hahaha, that was amazing. We whooped his ass GOOD.

Let me tell ya though, bein' surrounded by birds? It reminded me of this one time with my and my buddy Keith back home. We went to an aviary, which is this place where birds and shit just fly free, right? Well, Keith decided to practice his bird calls. Hahahahaha, oh man. Apparently there's this call that makes birds angry or somethin'. Turns out, he used that one instead of somethin' friendly, so suddenly all them birds? They attacked. Keith couldn't get outta there fast enough!

And I mean that literally! By the time he actually got out, he had claw marks and they'd pecked him to hell and back. What was worse? They plucked out like 90% of his hair, so he was bald. He had tufts of hair stickin' up everywhere and he looked like an old man with his bald head. It was insane! He gave up bird callin' after that, unfortunately. Me? I think he could've gotten good at it, but... I guess there's somethin' about gettin' attacked by birds that just kinda turns you off the idea...

Haha, luckily nothin' like that happened to me at the gym, so it's all good!

Anyway, yeah. His hair grew back! Even if he didn't shave off the bits that weren't plucked out. He didn't want the birds to win, y'see... So he kinda had longer parts mixed in with the shorter ones...

It wasn't purtty.

Hehe, yeah it can take a while! Especially if you end up going for the elite challenge once you get to Kanto. But it doesn't have to take forever. I mean if you don't get stuck in one place for too long you can actually collect them pretty quick.

[Oh Ellis...]

Your friend Keith sounds like a real character. He's your best friend, isn't he? Probably a stupid question but...

Elite challenges? What are those?

And yeah, he sure is! You ain't seen anybody tighter 'n us! We're like two peas in the same pod, but the pod's only big enough for one pea! That's how close we are!

Uh, I don't mean like, in a weird way or nothin', I just mean he's my best friend!

Gym leaders have more than one team at their disposal! Or...at least the ones in Kanto do. You know, I never stopped to see if the same is true of Johto. In any case, if you take the elite challenge they use a full team of level 100s. You still get the badge, same as if you went against their regular team but the battle is more of a challenge.

[Luckily or you, Ellis, John understands this feel of male best friendship. It's okay, broseph.]

That sounds excitin'! I can't wait to be able to be that strong one day. Suee is definitely one her way though, even if she's got a while to go. She's workin' hard though! She's such a good pig...

You will be one day! You're already taking all the steps in the right direction. And so will Suee.

I take it she was your starter?

She sure was! I couldn'ta asked for a better one, in my opinion. She's such a sweet little girl. And man you ain't ever saw a better wrestler! I dunno if you're into pig wrestlin' but man she's the best! Beats me every single time!

[And sometimes it hurts. But he can't complain because it's just so fun! He has no regrets, honestly. Even if he does get bruised sometimes.]

For some reason though, she still ain't evolvin', which is kinda weird since a few a' my other guys did that...

Uhh, I can't say that I have ever seen pig wrestling so uh...yeah. [He laughs a little.]

Didn't you say last time that she's kind of shy though? That may be why she hasn't evolved yet. My Bulbasaur was the same way, just a bit of a late bloomer...literally, in his case. I think he was a little nervous about evolving, myself. Mostly because he's nervous about everything new he comes across, even now that he's a Venusaur.

Or maybe she just doesn't want to evolve for one reason or another.

You should try it sometime, man! It's lots'a fun! Maybe if we ever meet we can both wrestle with Suee!

[But at that, he sighs softly.]

Well if that's the case, I won't pressure her to evolve. 'cuz y'know what? She's perfect just the way she is! If she decides to change, that's fine but it's fine if she stays the way she is, too.

But just outta curiosity, how'd ya get him to stop bein' shy? Did he just grow out've it on his own?

[John laughs almost nervously. He's only wrestled once...and it didn't end well for him.]

Aha, well wrestling isn't really my thing but we'll see!

[ Seriously, look at this kid. Does he look like a wrestler? No. He looks like a chubby littler nerd because that's what he is.]

That's exactly the right attitude to have! As for Fennel...well he still honestly hasn't grown out of it. He's a little better about it now, at least with my Pokémon that he's comfortable around, but I doubt he'll ever fully grow out of it at this point. But I will say this: I think having an overly confident girlfriend helps him. Monkshood kind of balances him out, in a way, and he seems more willing to come out of his metaphorical shell when she's with him.
